General
Is Kaupapa Threads Māori owned?Surely is, e hoa mā! Ngāi Te Rangi and Taranaki Iwi represent! We're also proudly part-owned by a beautiful Filipino wahine, her Scottish-born, Aotearoa citizen tane, and a Naarm-born 'Cork-Asian' tane who went and married a Māori wahine. So while our kaupapa is proudly Māori-led, the whānau behind Kaupapa Threads is a beautiful mix of cultures, whakapapa and stories, all brought together by a shared love of people, community and a good bit of bloody hard mahi. |
Where is Kaupapa Threads located? We're located in Naarm (otherwise known as Melbourne) with stockists lined up in Aotearoa for the very near future. Being based on Bunurong Country is an important part of who we are, and we're committed to supporting the First Nations communities whose land we live and work on. |
How does my purchase support Māori & First Nations communities?Your purchase does more than get you a bloody good hoodie! 5% of our profits is donated four times a year to Māori and Australian First Nations initiatives that support the education and revitalisation of our cultures, languages, art and history. We believe in putting our money where our kaupapa is. By supporting Kaupapa Threads, you're helping us contribute back to communities doing the mahi to protect, strengthen and carry our cultures forward for the next generation. |
What does Kaupapa Threads mean?Kaupapa refers to a purpose, principle, plan or underlying philosophy; the reason behind what we do. For us, Kaupapa Threads is about creating clothing with meaning, purpose and connection. Every piece carries a story, and every collection is created with our culture and our people at the heart of it. |
Who can wear Kaupapa Threads? Where is the 'Cultural Appropriation' line?Everyone is welcome to support the kaupapa. Our designs are created from a Māori perspective and are grounded in our identity, whakapapa and lived experience. For Māori, our pieces can be an expression of identity, connection and pride. For Tāngata Tiriti, wearing our designs can be a way of standing alongside Māori and supporting the kaupapa, without claiming a Māori identity that isn't yours. You don't have to be Māori to stand with Māori. |
Why is supporting First Nations communities in Australia important to us?Kaupapa Threads is based in Naarm (The traditional Kulin Nation name for Melbourne), on Bunurong Country. As Māori living and working on whenua that isn't our own, we believe in acknowledging the sovereignty, culture and ongoing connection of Australia's First Peoples to this whenua. Supporting Māori and Australian First Nations initiatives is part of our commitment to manaaki, reciprocity and standing alongside Indigenous communities. Our kaupapa doesn't stop at the water's edge, e hoa mā. |
Shipping
Where do you ship?Currently, we ship across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. Wherever you are, we're stoked to have you wearing the kaupapa. |
Payments
Can I pay with Afterpay?Does the end of the party sound like your aunty singing 'Love Don't Live Here Anymore' like she's not happily married to your uncle who's trying to keep himself upright in his chair? Of course you can pay with Afterpay. |
